A great night was had at BDDGP’s Practice Managers Christmas Function. Beth Wilson was the guest speaker, she provided us with a lively talk on her experiences as the Victorian Health Services Commissioner. Beth then entertained us with an ‘interesting’ song accompanied by a fantastic backup crew. Check out the photos!

A Christmas Survival Guide from Fernwood Women’s Health Club

logo_fernwoodBelieve it or not, it is possible to indulge during the silly season without putting on unwanted kilos and be left feeling guilty! Here are Fernwood Ballarat’s top ten tips on how to get through the holidays the healthy way.

  1. Don’t do your pre-Christmas food shopping on an empty stomach. You’re more likely to purchase healthier options whilst shopping on a full stomach.
  2. Pre-plan your Christmas meal, know exactly what you want to make on the day and ensure to include some healthier options such as low fat ice-cream for dessert.
  3. Choose a special outfit for Christmas day which makes you look and feel good. Remind yourself you want to look the same way in this outfit after the holidays.
  4. Ask family and friends not to give you chocolates, and if they do, you don’t need to eat them all in one day. Take your stash to work and share your indulgence around.
  5. For buffet style meals, allow yourself one plate of food and enjoy it. If you need to go back for seconds, wait at least 10 minutes between plates to avoid overeating.
  6. Talk more and eat less! Stay away from the nibbles table and keep the conversation flowing as you are less likely to eat too much when engrossed in a good chin wag!
  7. Choose low fat calorie drinks or set yourself a limit. Drink a glass of water in between each alcoholic beverage to minimise over doing it.
  8. Get everyone moving after your Christmas feast. Go for a walk or play a game of backyard cricket with the kids.
  9. Ask for “active” presents from your loved ones – a gym membership, rock climbing session, gym gear or a weekend away at a health retreat.
  10. Don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting to lose weight during the festive season. Instead, aim to keep your weight stable and get back into healthy eating in the new year.
